Osteopathy is a method of treating diseases that emerged at the end of the 19th century and is based on massage and joint manipulation. It is based on the theory that the body is capable of developing its own remedies against diseases and accepts the therapeutic and diagnostic method of scientific medicine.
It seeks to recover the body’s lost balance, reactivating its self-healing mechanisms with various therapeutic techniques (joint manipulations, muscular energy techniques, mobilization, stretching, HVLT, among many others).
Treatment depends on a complete body assessment, the type of injury and the patient. No two treatments are alike and a unique personal approach should always be followed.
It is a method of treatment that is dedicated to working with the body as a whole, so it is necessary to take into account all its “parts” when recovering from any of our ailments:
Articular
It deals with the musculoskeletal apparatus and posture. It is effective in trauma, spinal dysfunctions, cervicalgia, herniated discs, joint problems, osteoarthritis and arthritis.
Visceral
It deals with the treatment of organs and viscera, improving their function. It is effective for problems with the digestive system, sequelae of surgery and infections. The viscera are part of our body and as such we must give them the importance they deserve and treat them in case they are in any dysfunction. Visceral osteopathy works by eliminating structural rigidity, improving mobility and motility of the viscera while stimulating their vascularization and innervation. All our viscera can present referred pain patterns when they are in dysfunction, each of them in different parts of our body, generating in turn the existence of abnormal fascial and ligamentous tensions that generate greater structural rigidity, and as a result the possible occurrence of pain.
Cranial
Treatment of problems related to the bone structure of the skull and jaw, and its influence on the central and autonomic nervous system. It is effective for the correction of postural problems, cranial trauma, sequelae of stroke and neurological dysfunctions (Bell’s palsy, migraine, vertigo).
Cranio-sacral
It is based on the principle of the existence of a subtle rhythmic pulsation that emerges in the tissues and fluids of the body’s core, which is called Cranial Rhythmic Impulse. This impulse can be perceived as a subtle respiratory movement in all the structures that make up the craniosacral system (brain, spinal cord, cerebrospinal fluid, meninges, cranial bones, pelvis and sacrum), and is also transmitted to all the organs and tissues of the body. The power and quality with which this impulse emerges and is transmitted to the whole organism determines its state of health and vitality. The cranio-sacral system involves the brain and spinal cord, these organs are the center of being, without them the senses, emotions and motor functions would be inoperative. So the cranio-sacral system is related to the health and well-being of the entire body. The rhythm of the cranio-sacral system can be felt and palpated like the cardio-vascular and respiratory rhythms, but in a much more subtle way. Unlike the other rhythms, the cranio-sacral rhythm (CSR) can be assessed and corrected through palpation.
Gynecological
Here we can include those problems associated with menstruation, such as dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain), its regulation, amenorrhea … There are certain cases of infertility that can be treated from osteopathy, such as poor uterine positioning, poor vascularization, scars, stress, uterine tensions … During pregnancy is important osteopathic treatment to improve possible pain and adaptations, and thus help at the time of delivery. Postpartum is also very important, to help your body to return to its natural situation. We can also include problems such as endometriosis, dyspareunia (pain during sexual intercourse), pelvic floor pain/problems, urinary incontinence, uterine prolapse, problems associated with menopause, scars (cesarean sections or other pelvic interventions).
Obstetric
Its main objective is to ensure the greatest comfort of the mother and fetus throughout pregnancy, accompanying the woman’s body in all the changes that will occur during pregnancy, trying to achieve the maximum adaptation of this and reducing as much as possible the discomfort that may arise. What problems can help me? It is indicated for many of the ailments that usually occur during pregnancy, such as: digestive problems such as nausea and / or vomiting (especially in the first trimester), heartburn, burning, burning and poor digestion, constipation … Skeletal problems such as sciatica, lumbago, back pain … Fluid retention with swollen feet and / or legs. Urinary incontinence, especially at the end of pregnancy. Preparing the body for the moment of delivery. This treatment is very important during the last trimester, and consists of improving the mobility of the bones that are directly involved in the birthing process, insisting also on the flexibility of ligaments and muscles of the pelvic area (especially the pelvic floor muscles). There are certain situations in which osteopathic treatment would not be indicated. This refers to those pregnancies considered ‘at risk’, in which there are losses, in which rest must be kept, or in which there is a medical contraindication (an example of this would be to have problems of gestational hypertension). We work with non-aggressive and painless techniques to ensure the comfort of the mother and the fetus.
Pediatric
Colic, constipation, diarrhea, gastroesophageal reflux, congenital torticollis, bronchiolitis, sleep disorders, irritability, asthma, allergies, hyperactivity… This list is just an example of disorders and imbalances that babies usually present and that are usually addressed by traditional medicine. We apply techniques called “listening” and “induction”. Through them, the therapist interprets (listens) what is happening in the baby’s body and which parts of it present these tissue restrictions, returning (inducing) almost imperceptibly the movement and quality to the tissue and thus eliminating the tensions. When to go to the osteopath? The ideal is to apply the treatment during the first 6 months of life, which is when the techniques are most effective thanks to the great potential for change that the baby presents, and when the best and fastest results are obtained. However, the treatment can be started at any age, since osteopathy is a therapy applied to adults. It is important to know that it is a treatment fully compatible with conventional medicine and that it is not only curative but also preventive, i.e. it is always advisable to go in the first months of life in order to detect those possible imbalances that in 70% go unnoticed. There are cases in which it is particularly advisable to go to a first osteopathic consultation, among them, twin pregnancies, cesarean sections, breech and breech births, forceps, suction cups, premature babies … because of the high rate of trauma that babies can suffer in these situations.
