The Pilates method, although it has evolved and has given rise to a variety of styles and applications, is based on certain essential principles that must always be considered: alignment, centralization, concentration, control, precision, fluidity, breathing and concentration.
The practice of Pilates requires full attention. It is essential that the practitioner maintains a constant focus on each action performed. The exercises are characterized by controlled and conscious movements, which are coordinated with breathing, with the objective of developing a harmonious, coordinated, muscular and flexible body. As the practice progresses, the mind becomes familiar with the body’s capabilities, limitations, strengths and weaknesses, which contributes to improving both the physical and mental state. This discipline is highly technical, where the correct execution of each component of the exercises is more relevant than the number of repetitions or sets performed.
Control
Joseph Pilates called his method “Contrology”, as it is based on the idea of mastering the muscles. Every aspect of the movement is carefully considered. The reason such deep concentration is required is to be able to manage every detail of the body movements.
Energy center
The control center, or energy center, is located in the lower part of the trunk, as a girdle surrounding the lumbar and abdominal area. This center is activated by contracting the transversus abdominis muscle, being its strengthening the key of the method, which allows the body to move in a free and balanced way, avoiding movements and compensations that may be harmful. All movements originate and are maintained from this area, whose activation must be constant during the practice of the exercises.
When seated, the control center raises the torso, positioning the center of gravity at its highest and most efficient level; in the prone posture, the body is extended in both directions.
The constant practice of this method offers numerous benefits for both body and mind, six of which are particularly significant: it facilitates the burning of calories and contributes to weight loss, promotes the development of muscle tone, increases energy levels and strengthens the immune system, contributes to improving mood and self-esteem, increases flexibility and mobility, helps prevent muscle pain and injuries, as well as correcting improper posture.
